Monday Musings

January 12, 2010
As I mentioned in my Non-resolutions post, I am trying to make exercise a regular part of my life. After two of using EA Sports Active, I am happy to say that I am down 4 pounds!! Woohoo!! I am also trying to eat less after enjoying far too many Christmas treats.
I am doing the 30 day challenge that is built into the EA Sports Active. It has pre programmed workouts that introduce you to the different exercises offered. So far, boxing is my favourite – lunges and running are my least favourite. After the 30 day challenge, I will be creating my custom workouts of varying intensity and duration depending on my mood.
How are you doing with your resolutions?
Here is my weekly plan:
  • grocery shopping – it will be a big one this week. Hoping to capitalize on some sales and coupons as well. I am putting together a list of recipes to freeze. Once I get those organized, I will be posting on my big cooking day!
  • get extra Shoppers Drug Mart points – can get an extra 5000 points after spending $20 – if you need an invite to this friends and family event, please let me know!
  • sew adjustable waist band into H’s pants – she is such a tall skinny mini – she needs the length in her pants but they are massive around her waist! I am going to be trying this tutorial out.

Other than that, we will be enjoying a Chinook blowing through for a couple of days. H wants to shovel snow with Daddy and make snow angels.

    Frugal Friday – Price Guarantee

    January 8, 2010
Don’t you hate when you buy something and then a few days later you see it at a better price? Do you fume and complain throw up your hands and say, “Oh well, better luck next time”? Sometimes you don’t have to!
A number of businesses offer a price guarantee which means they will give a refund/ credit for a difference in the purchase price and the current sale price with in a particular time frame. The time frame can vary. I have seen them from 7 days up to 90 days depending on the retailer.
Most recently, I booked airline tickets with West Jet for the four us for a trip to San Diego. At the time, I thought I was getting a pretty good price. Then a couple of days ago, West Jet offered an incredible seat sale! I called customer service and they gave me West Jet flight credits in the amount of $345! We are also planning a trip to Hawaii in the summer, so those credits will be put to good use.
One thing to keep in mind, if you do get store credit rather than a refund, find out if they credits have an expiry date. (In my case, I have to use the West Jet travel credit within a year).
I have also successfully gotten a refund for the difference in price from Canadian Tire and London Drugs. Check out your favourite store’s policy on price guarantee.
You can sometimes even price match a better price at a different store to get your refund. Again, check your store’s policy.
If the store doesn’t have a formal policy, it still doesn’t hurt to ask! (Nicely, of course.)
Just on more way to keep your money in your pocket!

Since the calendar recently turned to a new decade, the blogosphere has been full of posts about New Year goals and resolutions. Mine are here.

Savvy Blogging is hosting a 2010 Blogging Goals Roundup.

Here are my blogging goals for 2010

    4. Post favourite recipes – I am in the process of gathering my family’s favourite go to recipes and I want to share them with you!

      Monday Musings

      January 4, 2010
Is everyone ready to return to the regular after holiday routine tomorrow? I’m not. Don’t you hate the after holiday let down? My living room loos so blah without the Christmas tree!!
January is a dreary cold month around here. Nothing but frigid cold, snow and ice.
So this weeks agenda is going to include planning ways to brighten our days as we spend in the cozy warmth our home.
      Weekly plan
      • menu plan – include 10-12 freezer meals that can be made easily in a day. I am getting my inspiration from Once a Month Mom, Life as Mom, and Money Saving Mom. The latter two are doing a Eating from the Pantry Challenge.
      • grocery shopping – dollar days and stocking up on a few essentials are on the list.
      • create a daily, weekly and monthly plan for cleaning and activities with H
      • spend time with my in laws when the come to visit for a couple of days.

What are you doing to brighten your January?

      December 31, 2009
      I like lists.
I don’t like resolutions. If one wants to change something, why not start the change at the time you think of it instead of waiting for the new year?
I don’t like resolutions yet I have a few to make this year.
      I prefer to call them…

      Plans for 2010

      • exercise – who doesn’t have this on their new year’s list? I WILL exercise 4 times a week using my new EA Sports Active. As I write this,I am waiting for the UPS man to knock on my door with it!

      • get out of the house with the kids once a week – whether it be a trip to get groceries or on an adventure”, we will be getting out of the house for a change of scenery, even if it is cold.
      • schedule computer and work time – like this post, my most important job is Mom and Wife. I do not want my kids to remember as always on the computer or phone.
      • loosely schedule by day, week and month – I want to do more activities with H (crafts, baking etc.) now that she is old enough and is interested. Any suggestions on good websites with 3 year old appropriate activities? Also, I want to get more organized with household management – cleaning, meal planning etc.

      Product Review – Tooth Tissues

      December 31, 2009
We are in the throws of teething – sleepless nights, whining baby. A teething baby is not always a pleasant creature to live with so when those little pearly whites finally break through, I want to take good care of them.
I have tried using plan gauze to clean my baby’s gums but he didn’t really like the dry texture. That’s why I was thrilled to try out Tooth Tissues.
Tooth Tissues were created by dentists who are also parents so they know how difficult it can be to care for young children’s teeth and gums.
Tooth Tissues come in a resealable bag that easily fits into a diaper bag for oral hygiene on the go! Older kids and adults can even use them too!
The tissues are 99% natural and contain water, glycerin, aloe vera gel, hydrated silica, calcium carbonate, xylitol, xanthan gum, potassium sorbate, and sodium levulinate (this is a preservative that keeps bacteria growth at bay and allows the wipes to be safe yet paraben free.)
I tried the Tooth Tissues on baby J and myself. The tissues have a nice soft texture (similar to a baby wipe). J loved to chew on my finger as I wiped out his mouth. He is working hard on cutting teeth and chews on anything that goes in his mouth. They tissues have no flavour so if you are looking for a minty fresh finish, you, as an adult, will be disappointed… The lack of flavour is great for babies though!
I would recommend Tooth Tissues for infants and those with young children who are just learning about how to take care of their teeth. By using this great product, parents can be assured that their children’s teeth are clean.
To find a store that carries Tooth Tissues, click here or you can order them online direct here. Shipping is available to both Canada and the US at very reasonable rates.

For to us a child is born,
         to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
      Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
         Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
